Free WAV files on the Web

One of our favorite types of sound files on the Web is the humble WAV file. It's really quite amazing what a variety of WAV files there are available out there.
Odd are, you can name your favorite moment from a TV show or film and somewhere on the Web, it's available as a WAV file that you can download and enjoy again and again.
WAV files are easy to download and manage, too, because they're so compact (usually only a few kilobytes in size).

  • Wavhounds.com - A cool site that features lots of up-to-date free WAV files and is updated weekly. From the Beatles to the Simpsons to Monty Python, you'll find it here. Categories include "Millennium" WAVs, animal WAVs, "demonic" WAVs, Windows 95 start-up, error, and shut-down WAVs, E-mail WAVs and more.
  • My Fave Wavs - Come check out Don Gough's fun collection of .WAV sounds from TV shows, movies, cartoons, commercials and more. Examples include sounds from "South Park," "The Simpsons," "Friends," and "King of the Hill." A new .WAV file is added daily.
  • The Daily .WAV - An impressive site that has been serving up quality .WAV files every day since December, 1997. Plenty of sound files from cinema, TV and even commercials for your downloading pleasure. Past selections are archived alphabetically. A quality, well-done site that's among the most popular of its kind.
  • The Answering Machine - This clever site offers a large collection of free, cool WAV sound files that you can use to liven up your phone's answering machine. Surprise and amuse your callers with famous personalities responding to their calls! From Humphrey Bogart to Hannibal Lecter, you'll find a message here that suits your tastes. Categories include movies, TV, comedy, "weird," musicals and more. The files are also available in MP3 format.
  • EarthStation1 WAV site - Looking for the opening theme to the Andy Griffith show? How about a World War II broadcast from Winston Churchill? You'll find all that and more here. This site has a cluttered look, but offers an impressive collection of WAV files from many genres. Categories include cinema, radio themes, TV sounds, historical sounds, World War II sounds, various sound effects, "weirdness," space sounds and much more.
  • SoundAmerica - This massive sound archive is a good place to begin in your quest for free WAV sound files on the Web. There's over 24,000 sound files here and a helpful FAQ that can answer many of your sound-related questions. Categories include: cartoons, comedy, movies, TV shows, spoofs, sound effects, "War of the Worlds," as well as a good sound utilities section. (Note: some of the sounds here contain adult language and themes).
  • Clay's Sound Emporium - There's lot of WAV files here from various TV shows and movies. Categories include: the Simpsons, "The Atomic Cafe," oddities, "Pulp Fiction," "The Wizard of Oz," funny stuff, and more. And if you're fed up with the lame sound that your E-mail program emits to tell you that you've got new mail, you'll appreciate the "Mail Call" section here that features lots of cool sounds specifically for that purpose. There's also a section on "How to Make Your Own WAVs."
  • Free sounds for your Web site - KeyTrax offers a nice free service to let you easily add WAV sounds to your Web page. Just fill out a short form and copy the coding that you are provided and you're all set. The only catch is that you must display their banner. Sounds include: voice effects, music, humor, holiday themes and business. There's also a nice collection of sound effects, including aircraft, bombs, clocks, computers, fireworks, guns, machines, nature, tools, wind chimes, etc.
  • British Comedy WAV Files - This site offer plenty of sound files capturing the funniest bits from various U.K. programs. Programs include "Red Dwarf," "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," "Blackadder," "The Young Ones," "Monty Python," "Carry On," "AbFab," and "Fawlty Towers" and more. So download a few files here and relive those magic moments from the BBC!
  • Har's WAV World - This site offers a nice roundup of WAV files that are specifically selected to be appropriate for Windows "event sounds." That is, when you start up your computer, shut it down, encounter an error, or get new E-mail you can customize the sounds you hear with this cool WAVs. Sure sounds better than Windows' lame default sounds!
